This is one of my favourite stories from Scotland- if you get a chance watch the Walt Disney film of Greyfriars Bobby.

Greyfriars Bobby was a Skye Terrier who became known in 19th century Edinburgh for supposedly spending 14 years guarding the grave of his owner until he died himself on 14th January 1872 aged 16.. 

There has been several books and films and became a prominent  commemorative statue and nearby graves act as a tourist attraction. Bobby belonged to John Gray who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a night watchman. When John Gray died he was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. 

Bobby then became known locally spending the rest of his life sitting on his masters grave. In 1867 Lord Provost of Edinburgh Sir William Chambers- paid for Bobby's licence and gave he dog a collar now in the Museum of Edinburgh and freedom of the city. 

Bobby was buried just inside the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard not far from John Gray's grave. A year later Lady Burdett-Coutts had a statue and fountain erected at the southern end of the George VI Bridge to commemorate him.

Castle Menzies in Scotland is the ancestral set of the Clan Menzies. It is located a little to the west of the small village of Weem, near Aberfeldy in the Highlands of Perthshire, and was formerly know as Weem Castle.

The sixteenth-century castle, restored by the Menzies Clan Society, was the seat of the Chiefs of the Clan menzies for over 400 years. Strategically situated, it was involved in the turbulent hisotry of the Highlands. 

Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Stuart Pretender to the throne, rested for two nights in the Castle on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The restoration of the ancient part of the castle involved the demolition of a greatly decayed 18th century wing. It as a large Victorian ballroom.

Close by Wade's bridge in Aberfledy stands the Black Watch Monument. It takes the form of a massive calm topped with a statue of Private Farquhar Shaw dressed in the original uniform of the Black Watch Regiment.

In the wake of the 1715 Jacobite rebellion, companies of trustworthy Highlanders were raised from loyal clans. They became known as the Black Watch for the watch they kept on the Highlands and from their dark government tartan.

In 1739 King George II authorised the companies be formed into a regiment of foot. The monument was unveiled in 1887 by the Marquis of Breadalbane to commemorate the first muster of the Regiment in May 1740. The muster took place on the Week Cow Park on the north bank of the River Tay.  www.highlandperthshire.org
